First, you need to have a Google account. If you already have a gmail address, then you’re golden. If you don’t have a Google account you will need to create one. You can do this by going to https://accounts.google.com and clicking on “Create an account”. Just get through all of the standard account creations steps and once you have created your account you are now set to start adding a local business location!
So you’re logged into your Google account. What now? Go to Google My Business and begin your journey into local businesshood. Once on the business page, click the big blue button that says “Get on Google”. You are now probably looking at a giant map. You will notice a bar at the top left. This is where you are going to start entering your business name and address. Don’t see it coming up on the drop down? That’s ok! You just need to click on the last option on the drop-down menu: “None of these match”. This allows you to add a new business – yours – onto Google.
Make sure you enter all of your business information accurately and it’s the same as the info you have listed on your website. If you are a business that does not have a storefront or a location people visit, you can choose to go with an option that only shows your service area and not your exact address. You can do this by clicking the “I deliver goods and services to…” checkbox. Doublecheck that all the information you entered is correct and if it is, it’s time to move on.
Non-service based businesses that only operate from a location may skip this step. Depending on if you are a service area based business or not, you may have gotten a step asking how your service works. Do you operate in an area code? Do you have a range around your location? You can also check a box to mention that even though you are service based you also welcome customers to your business location.
The next step has Google suggesting some businesses that you might be. If none of these businesses are you then you can just click on the “None of these match” text to add your business. All you need to do is agree to the Terms of Service and you’re set!
After you have agreed you have the choice of verifying your business or ignoring that and continuing to your page. Verifying your business has advantages such as being listed on Google search results, being able to deal with reviews and providing insights on where your customers are coming from. A verification takes a couple of weeks to arrive by mail, so please be patient in waiting for it as asking for another one will invalidate the first that was sent.
Once skipping or asking for a verification you can now continue to your business page. All you need to do now is customize it and make it pretty for your visitors. Get it verified, update it regularly and congrats, you have a perfectly setup business on Google! Make sure to let your customers know about it!
